DSWD-Sanctuary Center Psychological Service spearheaded a dance competition that aims to showcase the clients’ creative expression both in individual and in group setting.  The activity was held on January 31, 2020 and was participated by thirty-three selected clients from different dormitories.

The activity aims to boost the self-esteem and creative skills of all the participants in dancing.  The benefits of dance activity to clients include the social interaction, the discipline required in familiarizing the dance steps and the fun.  Aside from its heart-health benefits, dancing is a complete workout for the whole body. It helps them get rid of all the worries they acquired during the day for it is truly enjoyable and entertaining.  Clients with psychomotor delays will improve their motor skills for movement is essential in this activity.  Interacting with co-clients in a more permissive approach lessens their feeling of inferiority that enhances both social integration and self-confidence.

This activity recognized those clients with special skills in dancing that serve as the peer model to those less skilled.  When clients are more involved, they are more geared to participate, interact and to contribute.  Dancing can be a medium that stimulates their body and their mind.

The song “Tala” that has become a nationwide trend became the motivation to organize the dance competition.  Indeed, the dance craze as well as the melody brings its popularity that catches the attention of the majority including the clients and staff in the Center.

Aside from its danceable choreography and popularity in social media, it also has symbolical lyrics for the clients.  Tala is a message song that we can attribute to their present situations.  The metaphor, “Kapit lang ng mahigpit, aabutin natin ang mga tala, tala, tala, tala!” seyves as motivation to the clients who also have dreams and aspirations in life that they want to achieve which is possible through perseverance and dedication.

Sanctuary Center is a half-way home for female, 18 years old and above who are improving from psychosis and other mental illness.  It has a 100 bed capacity and is located in Welfareville Compound, Acacia Lane Mandaluyong City. ###
