The Elsie Gaches Village (EGV) community is celebrating a historic achievement as resident-athlete Nana Ysabel Vargas proudly represented the National Capital Region (NCR) in the ParaGames at the 2026 Palarong Pambansa, held in Agusan del Sur from May 24 to June 8, 2026.
Nana Ysabel’s participation in the country’s largest youth sporting event marks a groundbreaking milestone for EGV. Her inspiring journey from the residential care facility to the national sports stage is the beautiful result of her hard work, sheer determination, and the unwavering support of those around her.
For months, Nana Ysabel trained diligently to compete in the 4kg Shot Put, 200-meter dash, and the 4×100-meter relay. She was guided step-by-step by the Special Needs Education (SNED) teachers of Jose Fabella Memorial School – EGV Chapter, alongside dedicated EGV staff who ensured she was prepared physically and emotionally, focusing on her skills, proper nutrition, conditioning, and constant encouragement.
At the national games, Nana Ysabel competed against talented student-athletes from across the country, showcasing immense determination, sportsmanship, and confidence throughout the events. Overcoming the challenges of an intellectual disability, she fought hard to finish 8th place in the shot put event. While she and her team did not bring home medals in the relay race and long jump events, her presence on that track was already a massive victory and a profound source of pride for the entire EGV community.
More than just a sports story, Nana Ysabel’s journey highlights the vital importance of giving individuals with unique challenges the opportunity to showcase their talents and reach their full potential. Her success proves that with the right support, love, and determination, no barrier is insurmountable.
