Randy, a 28 year-old client with hearing impairment from Rehabilitation Sheltered Workshop (RSW), managed to support his daily needs as well as his family through the opportunities provided by RSW.
Having skills in food management and electronic services, Randy tried seeking employments in the past but no opportunities were granted to him, since the jobs he applied for require good interpersonal communication skills which he lacks of.
In 2013, Randy found out about the programs and services provided by RSW. RSW, in partnership with Philippine Airlines (PAL), provide temporary jobs to Persons with Disabilities through the PAL sanitizing project. Despite his disability, Randy had the courage to apply which eventually landed him a job as a utility worker.
Randy never sees his condition as a hindrance in achieving his aspirations and goals in life. He diligently works with focus on whatever task assigned to him, he manifests contentment on whatever he has in life, and he always considers his life as a blessing. His attitude towards work and his vibrant character brightens up the lives of the people around him.
Every year, Randy joins the celebration of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation awareness by participating in art competitions wherein he was able to showcase his talents and skills in portrait drawing. One time, in an artwork session with Mr. Robert Lopez, a master charcoal portrait artist who volunteered to provide rehabilitation workshop to Persons with Disabilities, Randy eagerly participated and took his chance in showcasing his talent in portrait-making to Mr. Lopez. Unexpectedly, Randy was able to draw his portraits perfectly. According Mr. Lopez, Randy gives attention to details and carefully follows all the instructions in the process of learning. Despite Randy’s limitations, his will and aspirations lead him to discover his potential and his intrinsic ability.
Through the opportunity provided by RSW, Randy turned his talent into business. Randy now accepts orders ranging from PhP1,500 to PhP9,500.00 for those who are interested to have their own portraits drawn in charcoal. This opportunity gave Randy additional income apart from his regular earnings as a utility worker at PAL.
