A group of scholars from the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) recently participated in a learning visit to the Rehabilitation Sheltered Workshop (RSW) in Project 4, Quezon City. The activity, part of the 2025 YMCA Rizal Youth Leadership Training Institute, aimed to deepen their understanding of social issues and promote inclusivity through direct engagement with persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The RSW warmly welcomed the delegation, expressing appreciation for the opportunity to highlight their programs and raise awareness about the abilities and contributions of PWDs. Mr. Michael De Guzman, Production Supervisor at RSW, gave an overview of the Center’s mission, vision, and goals, emphasizing its unwavering commitment to empowering PWDs. He noted the Center’s role in providing dignified sheltered employment and a nurturing environment where clients can build skills, gain confidence, and reach their full potential.

During the visit, participants observed RSW’s Garments and Carpentry Projects, where PWDs demonstrated their expertise in tasks such as fabric cutting, garment stitching, packaging, woodworking, and furniture assembly. The hands-on exposure offered the youth a closer look at the dedication and craftsmanship of the Center’s clients.

Beyond technical skills, the visit also gave participants a deeper understanding of the personal challenges faced by PWDs in their everyday lives. Through candid conversations, the youth gained insight into the resilience and determination of individuals striving to live productive and dignified lives despite limitations.

The RSW stands as a testament to the importance of inclusive spaces that allow PWDs to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society. The YMCA’s initiative is expected to inspire its scholars to become advocates for inclusion and champions of the rights and capabilities of persons with disabilities in their respective communities.
