The Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office – National Capital Region (DSWD FO-NCR), through its Social Technology Unit, recently conducted an orientation on the Solo Parent Welfare Act of 2000 (Republic Act No. 8972) and the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act of 2022 (Republic Act No. 11861). The activity was held on April 23, 2025, at the Golden Reception and Action Center for the Elderly and Other Special Needs (GRACES) in Quezon City.
The orientation aimed to ensure that DSWD-NCR’s solo parent employees are fully informed of their rights and entitlements under the law, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all its staff.
Ms. Marlene C. Guzman, Social Welfare Officer IV, led the discussion and emphasized key provisions of RA 11861. She highlighted expanded benefits for solo parents, including financial assistance, educational support, and priority access to various government services. Guzman stressed the law’s critical role in helping solo parents effectively balance their work and family responsibilities.
Under the law, a solo parent is defined as someone solely responsible for the upbringing of a child due to a range of circumstances such as the death of a spouse, legal separation, abandonment, or other similar situations. If you are a solo parent, you can check with your Local Government Unit or City Social Welfare and Development Office for more specific information about how to apply for these benefits and the requirements.
