More than 1,200 visitorless, sick and indigent older persons who are currently sheltered in various institutions will be visited on Saturday, October 6 by their fellow senior citizens for the simultaneous Dalaw-Kalinga activity of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Delegates from the Local Government Units in Metro Manila and representatives of the Federation of Senior Citizens Association of Philippines (FSCAP), NCR chapter will visit and offer gift packs and entertainment to wards and clients of the National Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City, Correctional Institute for Women in Mandaluyong

City, Hospicio de San Jose and Missionaries of Charity in Manila, Golden Reception and Action Center for the Elderly and other Special cases (GRACES) in Quezon City and Haven for the Elderly in Tanay, Rizal.

The Dalaw-Kalinga is in line with the celebration of Elderly Filipino Week which is observed every October 1-7 in pursuant to Proclamation No. 470 issued by former President Fidel V. Ramos on September 26, 1994.  The event aims to increase public awareness on the different issues concerning the older persons’ sector.

 

This year’s EFW theme “Nakatatanda: Sa Bisa ng RA 9994, May Dangal, Nagkakaisa, Buhay ay Gumiginhawa,” focuses on the contributions of Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010 to the improvement of lives of older persons.

Ma. Liza Mahinay, DSWD-NCR focal person for older persons said that other activities during the week-long celebration include the reading of the National Prayer during the flag ceremonies in all government agencies and local government units, Walk For Life last October 1, Intergenerational Concert at SM Fairview last October 3, Forum on RA 9994 on October 4, Kimona ni Lola fashion Show October 5 and Awarding of Sampung Ulirang Nakatatanda on October 7, 2012. ###
