To raise social consciousness about Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), break down barriers of stigma, and discrimination, the Department of Social Welfare Development-National Capital Region (DSWD-NCR) conducted Philippine International AIDS Candlelight Memorial which carried the theme “Engage, Educate, Empower” held at FO-NCR Grounds, Sampaloc, Manila on May 16, 2016.
DSWD-NCR Regional Director Vincent Andrew T. Leyson said that the activity also aimed to honor and recognize the people living with HIV and AIDS. He said, “Ang programang ito ay isang pagpupugay at pagkilala sa katatagan ng mga taong may HIV at AIDS. Ang departamento ay patuloy na magbibigay ng suporta sa lahat ng mga biktima ng sakit na ito,”
The activity is also in partnership with non-government organization (NGOs) namely: Pinoy Plus Advocacy Pilipinas, Inc.; Project Red Ribbon Care Management Foundation, Inc.; and Positive Action Foundation, Philippines, Inc.; who continuously advocate social awareness on the disease and provide support to HIV victims.
“We should help each other in giving awareness about HIV and AIDS. Let us encourage all Filipinos to undergo the HIV test. Don’t be afraid on the results because it is not a death sentence” Darwin Tenoria, Executive Director of Project Red Ribbon Care Management Foundation Inc. uttered.
Moreover, there were also testimonials from people who diagnosed as HIV positive. Moises, an HIV carrier, recalled that when he knew his condition, he immediately told it to his family. Unfortunately, his family didn’t accept him. Thus, he left their house and stayed in a foundation. With the support of the foundation and DSWD, he gained his strength and recovered from depression. Now, he dedicates his life to inspire his fellow victims to fight and be strong. He also helps in increasing public awareness about HIV.
Staff of DSWD-NCR, partner NGOs, and HIV victims commemorated the life and struggle of people living with HIV through candle lighting ceremony as highlight of the event. They also make a pledge of solidarity for the “positive community.”
“It starts with you. Accept it. Move forward. Be a catalyst of change.” Darwin Tenoria exclaimed.
