National Basketball Association (NBA) athlete Brandon Knight, guard of Phoenix Suns, and former NBA cager DeCovan ‘Dee’ Brown tipped off the NBA FIT Week in the country wherein five (5) residents of Elsie Gaches Village were among the participants last July 21, 2016 held at Trinoma Activity Center, Quezon City.
Knight emphasized the importance of healthy and active lifestyles by being active in sports lieke basketball, eating nutritious foods and having enough sleep.
Meanwhile, 31 athletes from the Special Olympics Philippines delegation including the residents of EGV actively participated in the drills during the activity. They were divided into three (3) groups and EGV residents became part of the Team Celtics.
The residents showed their athleticisms and skills during relay drill which made their team as a winner. They also impressed the crowd on their performance at over-under pass relay.
“Masaya dahil nakasali kami dito. Marami kaming natutunan (Happy to be part of it. We learned a lot)” said one of the residents after their fun-filled experience where they learned not only basketball skills but also the importance of having active lifestyle.
Elsie Gaches Village is a center being managed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development – National Capital Region (DSWD-NCR) which serves mentally challenged persons with underlying medical problems.
